"Hi, My name is Marcella Solinas, and I write you from Sardinia. My great grandfather, Giovanni Maria Deriu (Giovanni Deria 56), died in the explosion of April 28th 1914 in the mine no.5 of Eccles (Beckley), Raleigh County, WV. I have read that the dead miners in that occasion had been buried in the St. Sebastian Cemetery Beckley, WV and that in 1956 they have been moved….My family has always remembered with great affection the dead Giovanni Maria Deriu, but they never had the opportunity to visit his true grave. I would like so much to know where my dear ancestor is buried. I would like to do what my great-grandmother and my grandmother (7 years old at the time), have not been able to do. I thank you in advance if you can give me further information or photographs.” Cordially, Marcella Solinas (Sardinia-Italy).

P.S.:I have read some leaflets picked up by Mr. Thomas Smith, and being Italian, of Sardinia, I think that men's intestataris "accounts" banking they were a certain Salvatore Farina (typical name of Sardinia of the north) and perhaps the other man could be my great-grandfather, because the lady says DOMINICK DALDO... My great grandfather called Giovanni Deriu, but in USA I have noticed many errors of transcript, for instance in the book of the census its last name is written Derin. comunque it is a based hypothesis on the fact that Daldo has five letters as Deriu. I am sending you a photo of my great grandfather, so that if someone has other photos can send me.

Jan 9, 2004 "Dear Dennis, My name is Teressa Tessaro I have written to you before but, this is about a different matter, My grandfather Thomas Smith, used to clean the old Eccles Coal Mine Office, I guess he had privileges to old papers laying around, when my grandfather died we were going through some of his old papers, in there my mother found 2 old checks that were written from the coal company in 1914, to 2 coal miners that were killed in the mine explosion, their names were GOIANI SALRORTA, FOR $108.47, the second check was to DOMINICK DALDO, for $35.37, these checks were made to the Consulate of Italy, it says that these checks were found on their bodies after the explosion, they were both cashed in July 8, 1914, at the 1st Street Bank In Philadelphia Pa, I believe that the coal company sent these to their families in Italy, I don't understand it all, but, this is what my mother told me, she said if you contacted her she would make you copies of these for your web site, or would you know a collector who would be interested in them, Her name is Wanda Bandy....Just thought you may be interested in them, thanks for this web site, seems all the old timers from Eccles just loves it." Teressa Tessaro
