"Hello, This message is in response to a note from Kevin Cormack. My name is Jim Hall II. My grandfather Allen (Tubby) Hall and Grandmother Estelle (Sauly) Hall bought your grandmothers house in 1952. Tubby passed away in August of 2001, and Sauly is still living in the house on Purity Hill. Did you ever spend any time in the house? My grandmother has flowers that come up each spring that she say's Mrs. Cormack planted. I think that is pretty neat." Jim Hall II

"Hello Dennis, Regarding the Eccles group photo from the late 1940's which is at the bottom of http://www.eccleswv.com/eccles1940_6.htm I am able to identify the Boone family members in the bottom row, and perhaps provide a clue as to the identity of the man behind the podium in the middle row. The "Boone boy?" on the left is my late uncle, William Omar Boone. He was born on 28 May 1937 and died 8 Jan 2003. He is buried in Peterstown Cemetery. The "Boone boy?" on the right of the bottom row is my uncle, Grant Stephen Boone who was born on 21 May 1942. Dollie Boone is of course their sister. Dollie is married to Walkina BYRD. She is the pastor of the Sophia Pentecostal Church of God. She and her husband live in Harper. William, Dollie Mae, and Grant were the children of Omar (Omer) William Boone. If this group photo was taken in a church setting then it is possible that the man behind the podium in the middle row is my grandfather, Omar William Boone, as he was a preacher in the Missionary Baptist denomination.  Please feel free to contact me for any further information." Sincerely, John Nichols

"Re: Gorba: I read this passage (Below), but the email didn't work. My father is William Gorba, and he was born 1/9/1937 and was orphaned when he was 3 months old. No one ever adopted him, but an Aunt came and got his siblings, or so he was told. He was told that his parents were killed in some type of accident. I have no other knowledge and was hoping that someone might be able to provide so more information. I am wondering, if he is some how related to the below people." Thanks, Suzanne Adams

HERMSDORFER, Anna June
eMail address: gorbaaj@hotmail.com
(Lutheran)
My grandfather, Friedrich Wilhelm GORBA (GORBAE / GORBA) was of the Lutheran Protestant faith and was born at Burdungen, Germany (now Burdag, Poland) on 16 June 1870. He immigrated to America from the port of Antwerp, Belgium on 12 October 1894 and landed at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 24 October 1894 at the age of 24 after having completed his tour of military service to William the second, the German Emperor. His last foreign address is listed on naturalization papers as Buer Nesfalar ( Germany ?). At the time of his application for US citizenship he was living at Ehrenfeld, Pennsylvania; the date was 7 February 1917. My grandmother was Wilhelmine Henriette HOLLMANN, also of the Lutheran Protestant faith, who immigrated to America in 1803 to a Virginia port - I have no documents on her immigration. She, her mother (same name but reversed) Henriette Wilhemine HOLLMANN and her sister, Bertha HOLLMANN, immigrated together. Bertha HOLLMANN married Elfred NELSON (in Sweden) before the passage. My grandparents were married in 1895. The following children were born to them: Alfred GORBA, 20 May 1897; Frederick William GORBA, 4 July 1899; Emma GORBA, 16 November 1900; Anna GORBA, 20 May 1903; Henrietta GORBA, 21 June 1905; Ella GORBA, 3 February 1908; Henry GORBA, 14 September 1910; William GORBA, 4 November 1912; Hilma GORBA, 26 December 1917, and a son, ERNEST, who died in infancy. I would appreciate any information on my grandparents, who their parents were, anything anyone would be willing to share; as I was 5 when my grandfather died in 1942 and 6 when my grandmother died in 1943. They are buried in Prospect cemetery at Portage, Pennsylvania. They talked about Dusseldorf (shopped there) and Gelsenkirchen.

Please forgive my spelling. My father was the third child born, known as "Fritz" and he and his siblings spoke and wrote German. My grandfather spoke German & Polish and said he was born near the Polish border. I've found Burdungen on a map. I would appreciate any information about my family in Germany. Bochum is most probably where they were from as well as Neidenburg. I do not know my ggrandmothers' maiden name but I've been told she was married twice, her first husbands' name was SPITZ. I found the name of my grandfathers' birthplace on documents at the Ebensburg, Pennsylvania courthouse on his application for U.S. citizenship and sent copies to every branch of his descendants I had an address to reach.

"I have just read your last message from Anna Gorba and I believe I have found her great grandfather in both the 1910 census and the 1920 census.  In the 1920 census he was living in the Trap Hill district of Eccles with his daughter Augusta, but I cannot make out her surname. She was widowed and he went by Mike and did not work. In the 1910 census the same family was living in Quinnimont, Fayette County. He was listed as being a miner, and Augusta's husband was alive. He was a miner also, but unfortunately I cannot make out his name. I hope this helps. If Anna would like my email address for further information feel free to give it to her." Fiona Maddow

"Does anyone have census information for 1920 and 1910 for Trap Hill section of Eccles, WV ?
I recently found my Great Grandfathers' death certificate online at http://www.wvculture.org/vrr// It states he lived in the Trap Hill District of Eccles; Raleigh County and died at the age of 89 years 8 months and 15 days on May 6th., 1922. His name was Michael Gorba. His occupation is listed as shoemaker but I think earlier he worked in the mines. He is buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery ; though his name does not appear on Palmer Wilsons' information online. I have been searching a long time for information about him and his daughter Charlotte and her husband Julius Bodenschatz ( possibly spelled another way ).  This family emigrated from Prussia, Germany in 1893. I have the rest of this family's history .......some from Germany, ships manifests etc. Any help would be appreciated." Thank you. Anna Gorba

"Dennis, Wow, what a great and comprehensive site you have. I saw a note from a McCutcheon mentioning my uncle, Sleepy Lester. Another woman living in the Netherlands also mentioned my Aunt Peggy (Lester) and her husband Mervin. Of the Lester's, there were : Bobby (my father), Judy, Denny, Sleepy, Peggy, and Jimmy. Their parents were Faye and Ray Lester. Jimmy, Judy and Peggy all still live in the area, Denny lives in Circleville, Ohio, and Bobby lives in St. Albans West Virginia. I'm hoping to get you a picture that was taken of a four-person railroad team taken with both of my grandfathers (Ray Lester and John Godby). John is still alive and lives in St. Albans, West Virginia. Keep up the good work, I'll keep checking back and hope to upload some pictures." Robert Lester

Now if you ever want pictures of Holland , I sure can help you with that. hahaha I sure wish I had pictures to offer for your site but I don't at the moment. I am also a 3rd or 4th cousin of Little Jimmy Dickens. He is my mother's relative, her name was Dorothy Beatrice Dickens (Collins) she passed away in Beckley about 6 yrs ago. You have a picture of my cousin Jimmy Lester and my cousin's Peggy Lester's husband Mervin Barker. So you can see why I am so excited about your website.. Here is a picture of myself now. I will have to hunt my graduation picture up and will send it if you want me to. Thanks for you efforts to show people what Eccles was all about." Hugs,  Carol Sue (Lester) Evans

"Hello Dennis, My name is Jim Hall. I live in King, NC. I am sending a few photographs to add to the 1940's. These pictures are of Eccles Admirals memorabilia from the 1949 Championship. The ticket is admission for the 1949 season. The jersey is the one Tubby Hall wore as a player. He later managed the team. Also are pictures of the ball from the 1949 Championship signed by the players. I thought that relatives of the players would like to see their signatures. Harry Perkowski signed the ball. He pitched professionally for the Cubs and the Reds. He and my grandpa played together, but I'm not sure if Harry played for Eccles. You can see the signature of Oakey Mills who was the Sheriff of Raleigh County." Jim Hall II

I believe the girl next to her is Ruth Ann BolonThe little girl holding the "Make the Best Better" sign is Donna PughThe little girl seated next to her in a red dress is Maria Tessaro. The little boy seated on the ground on the far right wearing glasses is Michael Reedy, and I believe the little boy second from the left is Jimmy Blankenship.  Whew!  This really is amazing to be able to see us all again!  Thanks for all your kind efforts." I'm not exactly sure what explosion is being referred to, but I have some info that kind of relates, but not exactly. Wondering if the submitter had incomplete info or erroneous info, or maybe there was a different explosion. The post was submitted my Martha Doss Lee on 21 April, 2004.  There was an explosion that occurred in Milwaukee, WI, in 1937 at the Krause Malt Co. One of the casualties was Raymond Dahl, Sr. His son, also named Raymond Dahl was seriously injured, but survived.  The mother of the senior Raymond was a widow, named Nellie Danielson Dahl, and married a Walter Doss in Milwaukee. Is this the explosion that Martha referring to? By any chance?"  Thank you, Beth Steinberg Arnott

"Hi. My Family name is Barry, my great grandfather was a Wiseman and was killed in the Eccles mine disaster along with my great Uncle. We were raised in a house that stood on the hill over looking what they called then, the Big Office I believe. My mother's family, the Dennisons, lived there also. My brother Mike, who just recently past away, was big on our genealogy and I was left all his records. We just had a family reunion in Beckley this past weekend. All my aunts and uncles and cousins that all lived in Eccles at one time, were present. I still have an aunt that lives just above where the Big Office once stood. I don't think its still there. But its been a few years since I've been there.  My dad and Mom went to Trap Hill High School, Grace Dennison and Mickey Barry. Dad was born in 29' , Mom in 33'. I just ran into your site. I'll start going through what I have and submit some more info for you." Charlie Barry, Morgantown WV

I don't know how old he was or how many children they had. Can anyone help Brenda? I found marriage and death information of the period at the Beckley, WV courthouse.  They have the original record books. That's where I found out how my grandmother died in 1913. Try starting with the marriage of Boleslaw Polujan to get Mary's prior married name. Then work backwards. Church records may also be of help. "Dear Mr. Chadra, My name is Wanda Morris I am from the state of West Virginia and I am an aspiring screenwriter. I came across your website doing research on coal miners, and I was very honored that I had the privilege to sign your petition. In fact I am currently writing a script based on a true story about a coal mining explosion that happen in West Virginia, April 28, 1914.  I have a great deal of respect for these brave men and women of the past and of the present who risk their lives for us.

Sure there are many other people who go out of the limb and do things for us, however coal miners, and miners in general have been placed on the back burner. People are not aware of their lives and what they live through everyday. That is why I chose to write a script about this. I am doing this in dedication of miners all over the world. Also I am doing it so that people will have a better understanding for them, and respect these wonderful people. That is why I made my own petition for people to sign. It's called Wanda Morris's Dedicated Film For Miners. This is the petition link... http://www.petitiononline.com/2553124m/petition.html

The reason I have done so is because in the film industry it is a dog eat dog world. People are paid to read scripts, and about 90 % of them are thrown into the trash can. I won't let this happen, I believe it is the peoples choice whether they want a certain film made about miners.  It is NOT the managers choice, production company, directors, and so on. These people are in for what they can get and that is the money.

I come from a family that has a long line of coal miners. The person who really touched my heart and brought me to this idea was my grandfather. Who served in war world I after the war he went back to the undergrounds of the coal mines only to provide a more better life for his wife and 11 children.

To get down to the point I am writing you to inquire if the www.eccleswv.com Web Site will help support my petition as well. I know that you do not have to, however it would be wonderful if you could. This isn't one of those long term situations where you will not know when the screenplay is officially ready to be sent out. I will definitely keep you up to date on this. That is if you choose to support this. Thank you. Best Regards" Wanda Morris

Raso would be very proud of your web site. No matter where we lived or traveled,  Leno always told everyone about Eccles.  He became a very important and influential man, but never lost his pride in his people or his town. I am proud to have been his wife for 43 years.  Peggy Adams Raso

My father was Leno Raso. He died in St. Louis in 1999." Mike Raso

"Hi Dennis - I have a "very special" friend by the name of Butch Fitzgerald that knew Little Jimmie (Dickens) quite well when they both were with Hank Williams years ago - Butch wants badly to speak to Little Jimmie (Dickens) - I will provide Butch's phone number and mailing address if you like (his computer is out right now). I will give you more details on Butch's relationship to Hank Sr as needed (but it is enough to say that Butch is Marie Harvell's son - and that Marie was Hank's cousin) And Butch and I have been wondering how Little Jimmie (Dickens) was doing these days." THANKS, Robert Ackerman Palmer, Alaska

We don't know how you could contact Little Jimmy Dickens.  They tried for years to contact him for the school reunions, but could not get him to come, due to his engagements Our guess would be to contact the Grand Ole Opera and they could possibly help you.  Sorry we couldn't help. "I just ran upon your site from the site of Nyla Creed DePauk. I was looking through my old scanned photos and found a postcard of Calvary Baptist Church in Excelsior, WV. I don't have the original. I used to borrow old photos
to scan when I was researching genealogy. Thought you might be interested. If so, I can send by e-mail." Diane Brown

REPLY:

Hi Diane, I appreciate the offer but the Eccles, WV web site is really geared for the surrounding area in Raleigh County. The Excelsior, WV postcard is from a town east of Charleston, WV. further north of the areas covered. I also host a sister site www.Scarbrowv.com which covers an area in Fayette County. These two sites are hosted by me because my family settled in these areas in the early 1900s when they came from Poland.  If you have any photos pertaining to Raleigh or Fayette Counties I would be pleased to use them. Thanks for your kind offer. Dennis Chadra dennis@eccleswv.com aka

"I have occasionally written something for the web-site and regularly scanned to find anything new. I have a dear friend here in St. Albans, who worked for the Eccles company store about 1946-50. His name is Oscar Sanford and he ran the World Famous Eccles Grill for a period of time. He was from the Beckley area, but I remember stopping at the grill on the afternoon walk to Weber City and if I could find a few coins in the pocket,  I might play the big spender role and buy some cups of ice cream and get a half-dozen wooden spoons and share with a few buddies. I suppose it must be 2 or 3 miles from Eccles Jr High to my home in Weber City. Oscar sold insurance here in St. Albans for at least 30 years and his son Rocky still has the Agency."  Jack Durbin

"Dennis, I  thought you might be interested in this old Newspaper clipping. It is from the Register Herald in Beckley dated (Saturday August- 18 2001) About my Grandfather Victor Tessaro. Ever since i can remember as a little kid, I always remember my Grandpa Victor working in his garden's He has always taken pride in his gardening, and has always worked very long and hard in them. He starts out late in the winter- early spring preparing his greenhouses for seed planting. He plants a wide variety of beautiful,  fragrant flowers. vegetable seeds to latter plant in his many gardens. He has at one time  worked 3 gardens at once This has been a life long passion and pleasure for him with great rewards for everyone who received a treat from his garden. One of me best childhood memories is of Me and Grandpa Victor planting seeds in his greenhouses,  And helping him wash and dry his vegetables  in preparation for the State Fair of WV. He'd always let me help him. And for that I'm thankful  for the best memories of my childhood. If you would like to put this on your web site it would be a great honor to me and him. I want everyone to know how proud i am of my Grandpa. And that we all love him dearly." Rondia Acord Tessaro
