"Dear Dennis, will you please post this article for our family?! It has taken me almost 2 years to gather these facts, and find justice for my beloved brother! Thankfully for you I found one person of great help, and printing this article will also help in find others that knew him, and can provide more information. We are also asking to see if anybody that went to the Trap Hill reunion in 2005 have ANY pictures of him, or spoke to him to reach us, every detail will only help more!  This has been a tragedy, and unimaginable, and the truth needs to be told, and his dignity restored!" Many Thanks, Rhonda Fleming
PS, I told my uncle Emory "Harold" Fleming, and he has enjoyed your site as well, my entire family, even I was born in Beckley, and our roots runs deeper than any rivers! God Bless, Merry Christmas!

I have been trying for almost 2 years to find out what exactly happened to my brother, and finally had a local NC paper print this.....PLEASE help my family!!!! We are here in Cleveland, and getting LE there to help has been a disgrace! PLEASE print this article, and truly have justice for my beloved best friend!!!

Durham's Darkside

This is a follow up to this small item posted on Nov. 9th:

I have to stay in Durham - PLEASE help me! My name is Rhonda, and my brother was found executed in Durham NC, on May 05, 2005. His name is Allen Jackson Croft Jr. The sheriff there refuses to send us the reports, tests, and information we requested via the FOIA. This is the same department that handled the Duke rape, and the most recent fiasco of being caught on tape, plotting murder for hire, trafficking in drugs, and women for forced slavery as prostitutes, and counterfeiting. I have been threatened to be charged if I did not stop calling them to ask about the GSR results, and what they was doing about his case.

ALLEN JACKSON CROFT, Jr., died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, in Durham. He was 46 years old. Allen was born in Beckley, W.V. and attended West Virginia Tech, where he received a bachelor's degree in Computer Science. He later graduated from his beloved school, the University of Virginia (UVA), with a master's degree in Computer Science. Allen was employed at IBM for 25 years as a computer programmer and was a member of the UVA Alumni Association.

Rhonda Fleming has been writing about her brother's case at Websleuths.com. She tells a sad story of incompetence and "massive corruption" in Durham law enforcement. It sounds all too familiar.

some excerpts from Websleuths.com thread:
(Attn: Durham NC) In The Name Of My Brother

(Rhonda Fleming, sister of Allen J. Croft) -

I am hoping someone will be able to help me. concerning my brothers death. He was 46 and weeks away from retiring from IBM, in Durham NC. He was found executed May 11, 2005 on the American Tobacco Trail under a tressel, a "supposed," suicide. The sheriffs department boggled the case, and failed to adhere to protocol, and do an investigation. It has taken me over a year to glean what facts I have obtained. My mother and I both wrote under the FOIA, for ALL the facts, as they "closed," his case. A year later the detective for the case sent us a report, and it was full of hearsay, lies, and ineptness. He allowed 2 people to take his computer who were neighbors, and besides doing no handwriting analysis, or autopsy, they completely did nothing. The pictures I do have shows the crime scene, and he has only a couple of drops of blood on his clothes, (which, they also did NO GSR tests on.) There was NO powder burns to the wound, nor was there blood on the gun, his arm, or shirt. The position of his body also doesn't make sense, nor the fact he was pronounced dead 6 hours prior, yet was covered with maggots? I am PRAYING someone out here may help my family! I know we need legal help, but we are poor, and hoping someone will help pro-bono. He was an amazing man, and deserves better than to have died this way. Then, treated like roadkill....Please offer ANY advise, even though I have contacted EVERY official there is, the SHERIFF is, "untouchable," and nobody is willing to help.

The sad part to all of this, is that LE again, is more concerned with politics, than MURDERS! Durham is still more concerned with the rape case, than to solve our loved ones deaths! My brother was found executed under a bridge 3 weeks after Janet Araboa was killed, and I have had NO PRESS, and have had to fight and beg to glean what facts I have received!

Finally I am getting help from BriAnne Dopart, she is the crime scene reporter for the Durham Herald Sun.....She is going to do a story about unsolved murders in Durham, and the tremendous political climate that is preventing LE from doing their jobs.

The stench that reeks from the county officials is repulsive! These people are elected officials, hired to protect, serve, and seek justice! The WHOLE system is a quagmire of incompetence, and corruption!

More than a few bad apples [in Durham Law Enforcement], there are the ORCHARDS!... I am furious over the fact the rape case has received more media attention than unsolved murders and police gone gangsters!

If there is anybody who may information, please contact me:

"Dennis, I was in contact with you a few year's ago but have since moved and changed my email address. Regarding the picture of the Eccles miner's Eccles Local Union 5770 First Aid Team 1940's", there is an error in their identity. The second from the left is my brother Hubert Lawson. He worked the Eccles mine from his 18th birthday until he retired at the age of 58. Hubert passed away from lung cancer in 1993." Virginia Lawson Jones

"I was wondering if there was any way that I could get a copy of a picture from the person who submitted it? The picture under the title Eccles Jr. High School 4H Club 1966 submitted by Barbara Williams Hoke, March 24, 2004 is what I'm interested in. The boy on the bottom row wearing a flannel shirt beside the boy holding the sign is Glen Harvey and the little girl behind him in a light blue dress is his sister Teresa Harvey. He passed away a few years ago and I know it would tickle Teresa (my mother-in-law) to have a copy. Thank you for your time." Buffy Slate

My mother always called her Peabody, but I don't know where that came from. I do not know who the other lady is, nor do I know when or where it was taken. Grandma is buried on the "new" side of Calfee cemetery. I am new at scanning photos, so don't know if you can use this or not. I have other photos, and will be sending them later." Next year will be our 50th class reunion in conjunction with the next Trap Hill reunion, COME ON CLASS OF 57 LETS HAVE A GOOD TURN OUT. I married Harold Fleming of Eccles , class of 52 and we moved to Bedford, Oh in 1959 and still live here. Searching the site, many pictures & articles , have memories of my family. My dad is pictured with the Eccles # 5 second shift 1945 miners photo, so special, thanks to Jerome Stone. He also is pictured in the 1931 Junior class photo, thanks to Terry Cook, also Robert & Donald, my brothers, myself, & husband Harold, all have photos on the classmate site, real cool.  The “Eccles Admirals” baseball champs of Raleigh county 1949, in the photo James Harper my uncle, was a pitcher, the picture of the baseball also shows his autograph.  My dad Herbert French also played for them and was also a pitcher, I don’t know what  year. Ask Jim Hall II or the Carter’s if they have any photos or information of Herbert French Harper playing for the Admirals, or anyone else with information.  Now you can see why your web-site is so special to me personally, Many thanks."  Charlotte Harper Fleming

"To whom it may concern, My name is Julia Sandstedt, maiden name Taylor. I am from San Antonio,
Texas, originally born in Dallas, Texas. Like most people I thought it would be funny to Google my name one night. To my surprise it brought up a page with some pictures and web listings. One of the pictures was of an old receipt. Since I like to dig into history it peeked my interest. To my surprise, when I clicked on it. The receipt was for a woman with my name in 1964. It was even odder to see that it came from West Virginia. My mother, aunt and one of my uncles were born in West Virginia. My grandmother grew up there as well. I wish I could tell you the name of the city or town they were from but I am unable to remember at this late of night. I doubt that this woman is of any relation since my father was from here in Texas. I just found it very interesting. I also collect historical stuff that has to do with my name, date of birth, and other oddities. If possible I would love to get copies of these receipts and anything else you have on her. If this is possible please let me know. Thank you for your time." Sincerely, Julia Taylor

REPLY:

Julia, I have changed the page where you  found the receipts because I noticed they were in the 1950s section but should have been in the 1960s section (Eccles 1960 Page 1). So a re-search on google will come up with an error page. You are welcome to copy the photos for your own use. These were submitted by an antique store owner ellen smith smittyes@yahoo.com . I don't know if they are still available to buy. Also would like to know if any remembers a Bob Carter from western Virginia, he was a law officer I think in Lee or Scott county Va. Rumor has it that he shot two men by the name of Minor? I believe they moved to Eccles around the same time as Dad, (late 1920'). any information would be appreciated. By the was I have his gun, New Service Colt 45." "To help on questions, The two Webb men were brothers. Clarence Webb was the older of the two. Neither of the Webb miners survived. The younger brother's name was John Dona Webb. He went by the name "Dona". This is pronounced with a long O and rhymes with "go". Pronounced Do-na or Do-knee. Dona was not married, was age 22 or 23. His brother was Clarence Samuel Webb, who went by the name Clarence. Clarence was married, 14 months, at the time of his death in the explosion. He had one child, my father. Dad was named after his father, Clarence, and his uncle, Dona, who both died together in the 1914 mine explosion. My father was only one month old at the time his dad died.  My father, Clarence Dona Webb was born 26 March 1914, Raleigh County, West Virginia.  His mother was Nannie Belle Pack. Dad died in January 1978 at Portsmouth, Ohio.  I am his only son and the only grandchild of Clarence Webb. I was born 30 April 1941, Portsmouth,Ohio.  My name is Stephen Todd Webb.  There was no Dana as is printed, it is Dona. I have yet to find the source of this unusual name. Clarence is buried at the Stanaford, West Virginia, cemetery." Yours, Steve Webb

"Hi Dennis, I enjoy looking at the site. As for some additional info on the Eccles family, after coming over from England, many of the Eccles', including my great grandfather, worked the WV coal mines. Migration lead some to the forest industry and other's to coal mines in southern Illinois where my grandfather worked and my father was born. I would say the name of the town was changed from Wittenburg to Eccles in 1908 for this reason. Are there any documents available from 1908 that display the residents?" Kevin D. "Dennis: Just went browsing again. I see you have found out about your ancestors. That is SO great. There was something NEWS about International etc. opening a mine in Eccles but I couldn’t find that. Is it really true do you know? I looked at the picture (under your ancestors link) of where number 5 mine used to be—now a dirt road, etc. It is really a good picture of it now. Have fond memories of going there to be with my Dad (chief electrician) and watch all that was going on in one building; the noise was deafening, however!  It is hard to believe that a once vibrant place is gone."  Barbara (Page) Sowder

"Dennis: Just took a quick tour through the updated Eccles, WV site. What a great job. I will send $ next month as part of the thanks I feel for all your effort, but money could never really express my thanks. .............................I’m going back to view the site some more. Would you ask on the site: does anyone know where to get the book by Lacy Dillon, They Died in Darkness (1976). I used to spend a lot of time in the cemetery where many of the miners of an explosion were buried. In my day, it was unkempt with a lot of tall wild grass, but it was a peaceful place and I used to wonder what the lives of these men were like. Last I was there, the Clay family had surrounded it with a fence and it was well kept.  Again, thanks. And I still hope you will come to the 2007 THHS reunion." Barbara (Page) Sowder

"Hello Dennis: I am so glad that I found your web site. After you helped me get information on L. G. Ballard--which I appreciate very much--I have searched your site several times, and found other names that have corresponded with you that I would like very much to get in touch with--if they would be interested. I went to Eccles Jr. High School with Ray Robinson, Harry "Buck" Bennett, Gloria Vance, A. D. Nidifer and Carolyn Vance--which have been mentioned in articles on your site. I would like very much to get correspondence from any of these---if they are interested.  Thanks for the great connections you have made for many people---and thanks for all of the memories of WV heroes.  I really miss the mountains of WV, and hope to visit them more and more." Best Regards, Ed Dinkler Willingboro, NJ

"Dennis:  I was browsing my computer today, and just happened to think of a very good friend I went to Eccles Jr. High school with many years ago. So, I put his name ( L. G. Ballard) into GOOGLE, with Eccles, WV., and a picture came up with he and two other soldiers in Weisbauden, Germany in 1952.  I moved to Beckley soon after my years at the Eccles school, and in the following years, I have would up in New Jersey (don't hold that against me) With the coal mines being up--and -down---mostly down, I thought the money was in New Jersey.  Well--there is money here, but it costs a hell of a lot more to live here than in WV. Am actually thinking about moving back "to my roots".  Do you know anything about L. G. Ballard---and if there is an address---or e-mail that I could reach him??  The two of us had some great times at Eccles Jr. High. Thanks in advance for your response." Best Regards  Ed Dinkler Willingboro, New Jersey

"Dear Dennis, I have some deaths I would like to put in the obits... How do I do this??? I really love your web sight it brings a lot of people together that haven't seen each other in many years. I also enjoy the photos. I know they are going to tear down the old Silver Moon bar in Eccles, as the present owners put a double next to it. I really hate to see come down, as it is one of my first memories of Eccles. I have to admit, I spent many hours there growing up. As I did in Rosie's up across from the Eccles Produce Market, that was tore down some years ago. They may remove places, but the mind remembers them well. Thanks a lot for your help. "Hello, My name is Mary Honaker-Kessler and I LOVE your site. Almost every name on the message board I have heard of while growing up. It is amazing how small the world really is. My grandfather was Charles Edward Honaker and he married Addie Roe Cazart. I was wondering if anyone out there might have heard of him or know anything about my family. It is quite large, and they have weird nicknames, Jimbo, Rube, Charlie, Woody, Pee-Wee, Rodney and Henry. My aunts are Tammy, Sherry, and Linda. My grandfather died in a car accident or so that was what I grew up on, I have never seen a picture or anything and would like to know a little bit about him. Any info would greatly be appreciated."  Mary Honaker-Kessler

"..Wesley Brosky - .... lived in Eccles in the 40's in the #6 mine area, maybe close to 6 Hill Grade School. a friend named William Franklin Knapp, Trap Hill grad 1951/2, now living in Nitro, WV would like to get in touch. I remember Wes, as he was a skilled accordion player at a very young age. I suspect he moved away, before finishing junior high at Eccles. Also Bobby Campbell Knapp, class of 56 is trying to locate Shirley Massey "56 and Shirley Wall (Daniels) "56. Dennis, you are a jewel of the highest quality and rarely a day goes by that I don't check the site for updates. The health is shaky but the mind still has some days of clarity?"  Thanks Jack Durbin
