Apr 27 2008 "Dennis,  I just found your website while trying to find some information on Jeremiah Lester, my great, great grandfather from Eccles. On the website I found a picture of him along with some information from a Krista Barker from Eccles. Ms Barker made several posts about being related to the Lester family. This was in the 2002 correspondence. If there's anyway you can forward my message to Ms Barker I'd appreciate it. I'm interested in finding out how we're both related to Jeremiah Lester."  Thanks,  Tim Berry

I appreciate you. My parents and siblings deserve to be remembered when they were happy and had futures. I still can't get over how very pretty my sisters Janet and Joan were, and my brother Chris in one photo with Joanie was the sweetest little pumpkin ever. I hope the photo's make others remember something happy about my family. Thank you Dennis." In much appreciation, Scott Sullivan (Stoots)

Apr 8 2008 "Dear Sir, Let me introduce myself. I'm Joseph Derenge, son of one of the survivors of the 1914 explosion at the Eccles mine. That survivor was William "Bill" Derenge. Bill Derenge went on to another mine after Eccles. It was the Layland mine. You may have heard of the Layland explosion of a year later in 1915. My father also survived that explosion, too.  In 2006 a West Virginia historical roadside marker was put up at where the entrance of the Layland mine stood. In the church now at that site a memorial service was held in March that year. My brother, Franklin, and I attended as did several of Bill's grandchildren. Another remembrance service was held this year but I could not attend because of illness. I and my family would be most happy about any and all information concerning the Eccles mine and the explosion of 1914." Joseph Derenge Rockville, Maryland

I am the daughter of Jullia Ostafin Beckelhimer. William Marston Ostafin was my first cousin and was raised by my grandmother, Mary Ostafin. Julia and Willam were very close in age and were raised as brother and sister. William joined the Army and married a lady from Germany. I remember meeting his wife and maybe 2 sons when I was very young. His sister, Candy Freyer, lives in Baltimore, MD. I can give Rosemary some information about the Ostafin family." Old Eccles School Photo 6 2005 "These photo's are interesting because it was sorta scary getting to the building itself. The property and building have been purchased by a Church. The church sits off to the left of the actual school building. The surrounding property has a containment fence and fierce dogs. There is also a double wide trailer on the property with stern warnings against trespassing. We found several sweet elderly women cooking in the school auditorium and questioned them about the fences and dogs and very scary looking person sitting on the doublewides porch with a gun. It was explained to us, that the church had initially purchased the building in hopes of providing for the homeless, but due to the vandalism and raiding, the cost was to much to restore the building. People go into the abandoned buildings and steal copper, aluminum, and just about anything else they can rip from the walls. So to protect themselves from law suit, the new owners had to secure the area. We received permission to walk around and take our photo's, but upon entering the building itself, I decided it was unsafe. There are more photo's that I still need to scan that we took inside. It's a shame the school was destroyed."

"I would love to buy this property. The Carter property holds so many treasured memories for me. I spent as much time there, as I did at my own home. You can't count the hours of play in that barn. I think, when I went back, the most astounding thing was that it was so small. This photo is one of my all time favorites. Like I stated, I would buy this property in a single heartbeat."

Mar 20 2008 "Dennis, ...I would appreciate it if you could post the attached senior class picture of my father, Harlos N. Cook, (Coming Soon) to appear alongside of the more mature pictures you have already posted.
Additionally, I was remiss in not identifying him in the THHS photos of the Football and Basketball teams that your posted from those earlier submissions by me. He played the Center position in Football and in both photos of the football team he is holding the football. Bob Spencer, a lifelong friend of Dad who lived in Kingston WV, and who I knew quite well, was a Sophomore in 1931 and is shown in the Football team picture as the second student from the left on the back row. Bob's son Bobby and I were classmates at Kingston HS.  In the photo of the basketball team, Dad is the second student from the right on the front row, and Bob Spencer is the second student from the left on that row. Thanks for your work." Terry L. Cook

Mar 10 2008 "A pretty young lady named Julia Ostafin graduated in the class of 1950 from Trap Hill High School. I think she lived in Harper close to the RR bridge. She was Salutatorian of our class and very bright and maybe a bit shy. I know nothing at all of other family members. My name is Walter Jack Durbin (32) and was very active in sports and still keep in touch with several classmates. My best friends were Brice Covey (deceased) and Arnold Hinte, living in Cleveland, Oh. I live in St. Albans, WV and have been away from Eccles since 1950. I also keep in touch with Jim F. Williams (49), Glenn Seymour (51). I am long retired and in poor health, but still have good memories of my years at Eccles, 44 through 56 and of course the fun years of school at Eccles and Surveyor, WV." Walter Jack Durbin

Mar 2 2008 "Hi, My name is Rosemary Ostafin O'Bannon and I found the Ostafin name mentioned on your website. I am trying to find any information I can on the Ostafin history.  My dad was William Marston Ostafin and he was born in Eccles in 1932 and raised in Beckley or vice versa. He died in 1970 and there is nothing about his family that we know. His mothers name was Elizabeth Ostafin. He had a half-sister named Candy and I was told I was named after two aunts named Rose and Mary. I know Ostafin is his maternal grandmothers last name. His parents were never married and we don't even know his dad's last name. Any bit of information would be greatly appreciated." Thank you, Rosemary O. O'Bannon

Feb 27 2008 "Hi Dennis, I am looking for some information on my grandfather, Charles Davis who was killed in Eccles Mine #5 on May 7, 1942. His death certificate states that he was crushed by a motor car when the cable malfunctioned. He was killed at 5:30 in the morning, so he was
working night shift. My grandmother was 6 months pregnant with my mother at the time. My grandmother then remarried when my mother was 7. I have not been able to find an accident report.
Charles Davis' father was William (Bill) Davis. Bill was the one who reported his son's death. His father in law, Tivis Tipton Minor was a superintendent of the mines but had already passed away by this time.

My mother has very little information about her father, just because nobody talked about the accident. My grandmother gave as much information as possible, however, she has a limited knowledge of some things.
I am looking for any kind of information regarding Tivis Minor, William Davis and Charles Davis from the years 1938-1942. I appreciate any help you can give me." Thanks, Linda Ash

Feb 25 2008 "Some of what was said in the prior email from Terry Cook is correct. Some is not correct. I've outlined what I know below:

First, it is correct that this is the Junior Class photograph, and not the Senior Class. It was taken at a time before Dempsey Snuffer left school to begin working in the coal mines locally in West Virginia. So the year following this, Dempsey Snuffer was not in the school and did not graduate.

Second, it is correct that the photograph shows some of those who would become the graduating class of 1931; but it is not the class of 1931. There would be those who graduate in 1931 who are not in the photograph, and at least Dempsey Snuffer would not be in the class although he was present at the time of the Junior Class photograph.

I do not know where the photograph was taken. I said that when the photograph was originally submitted. So it might be that the photograph's location is what Mr. Cook suggests.

As to the identities of those whom I was able to name, I am confident of those individuals. This photograph was in my parents' possession, and they told me the identities. I cannot see any reason why they would be in error, given that they were two of the three they identified to me, and the third one was a brother of my father's." Kindest regards; Denver C. Snuffer, Jr.

Feb 22 2008 "Dennis, I believe a correction might be in order. I'm not certain, but I believe the photo submitted by Denver Snuffer May 7, 2006, might be misnamed and maybe a couple of names of the students might be in error.
First, I believe the students in the picture are of the Junior class from Lester High School in year 1930, who later became part of the first graduating class in 1931 at Trap Hill High School. The reasons I believe this to be the case are as follows:
(1) The building in the background is of frame construction and Trap Hill was constructed entirely of brick. I do not believe Trap Hill had any entrances constructed of wood. This suggests it was taken before Trap Hill was opened. It probably was from another school building in year 1930, and probably Lester High School because of the following.
(2) My father, Harlos N. Cook is the student on the top row, second from the right. My father was in the junior class at Lester High School in 1930.
(2) Barty Wyatt was the man standing on the right end of the top row - beside my father. On the "Faculty Page" of the Trap Hill annual published for the first graduating class of 1931, "Trap Hill High School 1931 Annual - Faculty names and credentials," that I submitted for posting on March 26, 2006, "Eccles, WV Classmates Page 13 of 17," Barty was listed as Principal of Lester High School in 1930 before becoming the first Principal at Trap Hill for the class of 1931.
Because of the above I believe this picture should be entitled, " 1930 Lester High School Junior Class Photo."

Further, I understand that Denver Snuffer says the two students on the top row, from the left, were Demsey Snuffer, and to his right, Denver's father, who was Dempsey's twin, also named Denver Snuffer. It must be noted that Dempsey Snuffer did (not) graduate in the 1931 class of Trap Hill; whereas Denver did, so this picture is not the Trap Hill High School 1931 Class Photo.
Denver certainly knows better than I do which student in the picture was his father; however, when comparing the picture to the photos of students in the 1931 Trap Hill Annual, it appears to me that the student he says is his father, second from the left on the top row looks more like Buster Bennett, who also was from Lester. Further, the student on the top left looks exactly like the photo of his father in the 1931 Trap Hill Annual. He was a twin of Dempsey, so it could be expected that they would look alike. Further, It must be noted that Buster Bennett graduated in the 1931 Class of Trap Hill; whereas, Dempsey did not. Is is possible that Dempsey was not in the Lester photo and instead it was Denver on the left and Buster standing beside him?

I really think the student second from the left on the top row is Buster Bennett. The mouth, nose, eyes and ears are identical to those in the 1931 annual picture of Buster.
Therefore, I believe the students in the photo are as follows:
Top Row: Denver Snuffer rather than Dempsey, Buster Bennett rather than Denver, “Not Sure, but may be Homer Hutchinson or Palmer Falin”, Okie Henderson (Probably), Obal Canaday (Probably), Harlos N. Cook, Barty Wyatt who was Principal of Lester HS and later Principal of Trap Hill HS; Middle Row: Sylvia Bond, Rachel Martin (Probably), Bernice Owen (Probably), “Not Sure, but may be either: Margaret Cox, Ruth Campbell, Virginia Noce or Helen McMullin”; Bottom Row: Garnet Trail, Myrtle Bond (Probably).

I apologize greatly for questioning Denver's assignment of names, but I think the second person on the left is Buster Bennett. I may be wrong, and if so I strongly apologize to Denver." Terry L Cook, Harlos N. Cook’s son

1931 Diploma
1931 Commencement Announcement, Front
1931 Commencement Announcement, Baccalaureate

There will be more to come as I decide what might be of value." Sincerely, Terry L Cook, Harlos N. Cook’s son

Feb 10 2008 "I noticed several references to Little Jimmy Dickens. I am interested in finding more about his family. In his song, "Sleeping at the Foot of
the Bed", he mentions Uncle Fred and Aunt Liz. They are my great aunt  and uncle Freddie Dickens and Elizabeth Gillam. She was the daughter of Edward Merida Gillam and Artie Ann Hicks from Floyd County, Kentucky. Unfortunately, all I have is Fred and Elizabeth's marriage about 1910. I have no idea who were Fred's parents and brothers and sisters. If anyone in Eccles County has information, I would love to know... Great Aunt Liz gave the bed to my grandparents, Henry and Minnie Mae Crisp Gillam (Gillum) who had that old feather tick mattress in their house in Gillum Holler, Hunnewell, Greenup County, Kentucky, and as a little boy, I slept on it whenever I visited, often at the foot, sharing it with my cousins." During 2006, at a family reunion in WV, I scanned pictures of Donald Tex Moore's 1951 Trap Hill HS Class Ring, and Virginia Faye Acord (Mullins) 1935 Trap Hill HS Class Ring.  The picture of Acord twins, Virginia Faye and Sarah Inez in front of an Eccles store. circa around 1935. We are back in service. Hope you had a Happy New Years. Thank you, Shirley Ellis and Barbara Sowder for your generous support for 2008.  Our web hosting service will be moving this website to a new server and we will lose our capability for searching (I will switch over to a paid site-dedicated Google Search page when the time comes). I plan on a major re-design of the web site but it will take awhile.  The site has grown quite a bit over the past several years. Please continue to submit your photos, stories, etc.   Dennis Chadra dennis@eccleswv.com
