"This is to report
that my father,
Harlos N. Cook, Trap Hill High School Class of 1931,
the first, died on March 4, 2006, at the age of 95. In his
possessions were a copy of the 1931 annual, and separate pictures of
the 1931 football and basketball teams, of which he was a member. My
father was a remarkable man, who lived life to the fullest. He was a
coal miner, poet, author of stories, and writer of songs. He was a
character liked by most everyone........"
Mr. Terry L. Cook Midlothian, VA

after which he retired from the Richmond City Parks and Recreation
Department. He was a member of Gethsemane Church of Christ in
Mechanicsville where he served as Deacon and Deacon Emeritus. Two of
his great enjoyments in life were camping and hunting squirrels in the
mountains of western Virginia with his favorite canine good friend
Pugie, a sport in which his great abilities were unparalleled; and
sitting on the porch of his garage overlooking a much beloved
vegetable garden behind his home in Spring Meadows, for which
newspapers reported his unique ability for growing giant Hanover
Tomatoes. He was a writer of songs and his many short stories and
poems were published in various media. The following poem entitled,
“To My Maker,” acknowledges his spiritual hopes at the end of a
full and happy physical life:
I see a sea, the bluest sea
Close by the ocean side;
Someday in my silvery ship of dreams,
Maybe I could take a ride.
To sail and sail under God’s Great Main,
Far to some distant shore;
Where I’ll beach my craft on the sand of time
And not sail away anymore.
Where I’ll meet the man who gave me the right
To live on this beautiful earth;
The self same God that gave me birth.
There’ll be a castle built for me,
After my life is done;
Not for the bad or the sin I left,
But, for the good things I have done.
I’ll dwell there forever and eternal,
Far from this earthen sod;
Close to the touch of my maker,
The great and living God.
